TRAI plans to review inter-usage connection charges soon
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is again considering reviewing the inter-usage connection (IUC) charges. These are charged by one telecom operator to another for completing calls and short message services (SMS). TRAI had issued the IUC charges, in 2013, after holding extensive consulation with the stakeholders.
Following the conclusion of consultation regarding IUC charges revision, in May 2013, TRAI issued SMS Termination Charges Regulations 2013, imposing Re 0.05 as termination charge on each transactional SMS and Re 0.02 on each normal SMS on operators from whose network the message originates.
Prior to that, in its 2009 recommendations, TRAI had fixed a mobile termination charge at Re 0.2 per minute for all local and national long distance services. It had also raised the mobile termination charge for incoming international calls to Re 0.4 per minute from Re 0.3, while putting a ceiling on carriage fee of Re 0.65 per minute for domestic long distance calls.
